HAPPY NEW YEAR'S!!!

Not only are we starting a new year, we are starting a new decade. The aught's (2000-2009) are officially over. When we look back was it a good year? How about a good decade? It is always crystal clear when we look backwards, if only we could see into the future. Well, maybe we can when it comes to our health.

We know from research (and life experiences) that if we maintain an ideal body weight, stretch and exercise on a routine basis, that we have a great reward of generally good health. Look back on the last year or decade. Did we all do as much as we could to maintain our health? Most of us would say no…including myself. Why do we cheat ourselves out of good health? Laziness plays a part, poor habits, lack of time, all seem to come to mind. Personally after 22 years of practice, 19,500 new patients, and over 300,000 patient office visits seen in my clinic, I think we take our health for granted and put off today those things that we know will be beneficial. It has become a remote control society…just watch the evening news…who does all the advertising? The pharmaceutical industry...wanting us to try the next best wonder drug to help boost their corporate profits for their shareholders.

What if instead we focused in America on the real problem...we have become a deconditioned society. For most people, a 10% loss in body weight would reduce our co-morbidities by 90%. What are co-morbidities? Adult onset Diabetes, Essential Hypertension, Hyper cholesterol, High Triglycerides...So you ask me... I weigh 200 lbs, if I lose 20 lbs. there is a 90% chance that I will eliminate those problems?? YES, YES, and YES...So why don't we do it? Is it easier to go to your primary care physician and be placed on a statin cholesterol lowering medication that causes muscle tissue breakdown in your large muscle groups? Apparently so since a high percentage of the population chooses that choice rather than losing twenty pounds.

We can help you on your quest to be healthy. Just ask...a very wise man once said that the doctor of the future will concentrate on the care of the spine, human frame and focus on diet and nutrition. (Thomas Edison) The doctor of the future is your chiropractic physician. Let's look back at this time next year knowing we did all we could to preserve our most precious commodity…our own health.

Yours in Health,

R. Kim Etheredge, D.C.

Get a Handle on Your Weight

By Editorial Staff
Everyone makes New Year's resolutions - vowing to lose weight, spending hundreds of dollars on gym memberships, fitness equipment and weight-loss programs - but for many, the battle of the bulge can seem never-ending.

In a recent study, 175 adults between 40 and 65 years of age, all considered overweight or mildly obese, were assigned to one of three exercise groups for six months; or to a control group that did not exercise. The exercise groups were defined as follows: low amount/moderate intensity, equivalent to walking 12 miles per week; low amount/vigorous intensity, equivalent to jogging 12 miles per week; or high amount/vigorous intensity, equivalent to jogging 20 miles per week.

According to the researchers, the amount of exercise related to changes in visceral fat (a type of fat surrounding the abdomen). They emphasize that "even a relatively modest exercise program ... prevented significant increased visceral fat," and recommended that "until we are able to prevent weight regain after short-term dieting success, a greater emphasis toward prevention should be a major goal in the U.S." So this year, keep that New Year's resolution and get rid of your beer belly, spare tire or love handle by adopting a consistent exercise program. Consider it the start of a new, healthier you.

Whiplash

Even seemingly minor auto accidents and falls can be the cause of many future problems, and it may be weeks or even months before you feel its effects. The tiny displacement of the bones in the neck and back, caused by the whipping action of your head, are known as whiplash. Left untreated it can cause neck pain, headaches, sinusitis, insomnia, shoulder or arm pain, and face or chest pain. Chiropractors are specialists in diagnosing, treating, reporting, and protecting any impairment that may involve any legal questions with whiplash.

Who do you know that suffers from Whiplash and could use our services?
