Doctor's Corner

Dr. Etheredge's Corner:

Why should I see a Chiropractor?

Last week we discussed some reasons for ongoing chiropractic care. These included increased movement of the vertebra to remove fixation of the spinal column. We also discussed removing nerve irritation or impingement, thus allowing normal neurological function. Both of the reasons above lead to increased function and less pain which should be enough to justify Chiropractic treatment.

What if I told you research also indicates that Chiropractic treatment helps the Immune system of the human body? The Immune system is the defense mechanism of our body. It fights off viruses, bacterial infections and other harmful substances to the system. It even sometimes attacks itself in various disease processes called auto-immune disease. These include rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus.

A few years ago one of the top AIDS researchers in the United States was searching for the pathway for the AIDS virus to attack the Central Nervous System (The brain and spinal cord). Her name is Candice Pert and she documented some of her studies in a wonderful book called The Molecules of Emotion. The interesting part of her research from a Chiropractic standpoint was that she was able to document the neurological pathways from the spinal column to the brain and the immune system. Effectively proving what most Chiropractors have known for 110 years that Chiropractic care actually helps you stay healthier. I have been in practice for 23 years and have had 350,000 office visits in my career. It never fails to amaze me the number of my patients who see me routinely that profess to have less colds and viruses, etc. While we don't usually go into great detail to explain why...the reason is Chiropractic care has a favorable effect on the immune system. A spinal manipulation stimulates neurological pathways in the spine which help your general health. We have always talked about Homeostasis (The tendency to stability in the normal body states (internal environment) of the organism)....which essentially means the body has the ability to maintain ideal health on its own if we don't mess it up with our habit patterns.

Do you think poor posture, bad lifting habits, sports injuries, less than ideal body weight, poor mental attitude, poor dietary habits, smoking, drinking alcohol, stress, may interfere with Homeostasis of the body?.....I do!.....Why not control those things we can control?...Why not quit worrying about those things we can control? How about taking care of the human frame? Our body temple?....This author ventures to say we are all better off when we include Chiropractic care in our overall approach to better health.

Yours in Health,

R. Kim Etheredge D.C.

Self-Care Strategies for Your Busy Lifestyle
By Dr. Brian Jensen

According to Jack LaLanne, who still works out for two hours a day and eats at least 10 fresh, raw vegetables daily, "Exercise is king, nutrition is queen, and if you put them together you build a kingdom!" Here are a few ways you can build your own "kingdom" even in the midst of your hectic, stressful life.

Challenge Your Body: Higher levels of physical fitness reduce the risk of heart disease and early death. Try to achieve a burn rate of greater than 10 calories per minute. If you go to the gym two to three times a week and spend 30-60 minutes per session, you can focus on 10-minute high-intensity sessions on your off days

Feed Your Body: Nine servings of vegetables are recommended per day. (If you can do 10, like Jack does, go for it!) Boost the health benefits by eating different colors of produce. This is called the "technicolor" plan. Additional healthy eating suggestions include:

1) Eat more cold-water fish like salmon for the benefits of omega-3s. These lower the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, improve mood and concentration, and are good for the brain.

2) Drink red wine or eat grapes. The resveratrol in dark grapes is being studied for its effect on extending life, which it seems to do for almost every species studied.

3) Eliminate sugar. Sugar's effect on hormones, mood, immunity, weight, and possibly even cancer cells is enormous - and it's all negative. To the extent that you can remove sugar from your diet, you will be adding years to your life and life to your years.

Rest Your Body: Insufficient sleep depresses the immune system, making you susceptible to colds, upper-respiratory infections, low energy, weight gain, a tired appearance, and other complaints like feeling irritable. Proper sleep hygiene involves getting uninterrupted sleep, in the dark, without the television on, in a relaxing environment.

The overall goal is to get you in the best shape of your life without spending considerable time doing it - because after all, how much of that do you have these days? Talk to your doctor for more information.
